Staff at McGill Labour Union Win 14% Wage Increase over Two Years
Public Service Alliance of Canada Local, AMUSE reaches successful 2-year agreement with The General Union
The Public Service Alliance of Canada’s Association of McGill University Support Employees (AMUSE) have ratified their third collective agreement with The General Union.
The new agreement establishes a 14% wage increase over the two year collective agreement; 7% in the first year and 7% in the subsequent year. In addition, the parties also agreed to an additional paid holiday in February.
The new contract also establishes summer holiday hours which decreases weekly hours for workers by 10% without loss of pay for the months of June, July and August and prohibits meetings after 12pm on Fridays during those months.
The new contract was agreed to quickly with AMUSE and The General Union coming to an agreement in just a few bargaining sessions.
These additional compensations and improvements to work conditions bolster the previously established collective agreement which includes 210 hours of paid sick leave for full-time employees, a robust health insurance plan covered by the Employer at 80% and a Labour Relations Committee established to manage and resolve ongoing workplace issues.
AMUSE is a labour union representing 1,400 temporary workers employed by McGill University. Staff and volunteers at AMUSE have a well deserved reputation playing an essential role in enabling a high-turnover, low-wage workforce to assert their labour rights on the job.
“One of the centerpieces of our conversations during bargaining was about how union staff invest care and passion into this type of work,” said Tricia Robinson, AMUSE employee, “We care for the members of the unions we work for so deeply, and so to swiftly come to a finalized contract that reflects the type of working conditions we deserve for that compassion and commitment made this process a reward in itself.”
Employees who seek to improve their working conditions are encouraged to reach out to Syndicat général for further information on unionizing their workplace.
